How to download camera photos from BlackBerry Curve onto my computer?

Hello,

I got a purple BlackBerry Curve for my birthday 3 years ago.

Its battery has now inflated, meaning it won't fit into the back of the phone.

However, I removed the SD card from the phone, so all my photos are safe.

I want to download the photos from the SD card onto my computer, so I can back them up.

How do I do that?

Does your computer have an SD card reader? all you need to do is connect the SD card to one and your computer will be able to copy files to / from it.

You can buy a USB SD Card Reader, you might also require an Micro SD to SD Card adapter depending on the type of SD card you have.

I have a Micro SD to SD card adaptor at home - it's right on top of my bedside drawer, in fact!

The SD card I used to use in the BlackBerry is now in my new phone.

Maybe I can use that?

If the SD card is in your new phone i imagine the photos will have just appeared in that phones gallery (presuming you didnt format the card)

The thing is, the images have an ".rem" extension at the end of their names (after the .jpg extension).

This makes them unviewable on a computer, as they aren't 'real' .jpg files.

How can I turn them into viewable JPGs?

You have to turn off the BlackBerry encryption. You can do so by going to Options > Advanced > Media Card > Encrypt Media Files and choosing no for the Encryption. I would imagine you can at least power the device on just by having the power cord plugged in. I don't know if there are other ways to disable the encryption.

My BlackBerry's battery has inflated, which means I have to press down really hard on the back cover and keep it constantly plugged in.

There may be other ways to decrypt the card but as far as that information if there is or not, I am unsure of. As soon as the encryption is turned off though, it may take a little bit to turn it off, you should be okay to turn the device off. That being said be careful with that battery as if it's bulging, many things could go wrong with it, while highly unlikely, it exploding or catching fire IS possible.

I ordered a replacement battery off Amazon, and it should arrive within the next week, so as soon as I receive it, I'll insert it into my BlackBerry and it should work as good as new.

Then I'll re-insert the SD card and turn the encryption off.

That should work just fine and be a safer alternative than trying it with the old battery. After you get the new battery, give us an update if it worked or not, which I'm pretty sure it'll work just fine.

My new BlackBerry battery arrived in the mail today, so I inserted it into my BlackBerry, and it now works as good as new.

I turned off the encryption like you said, but the pictures still have the '.rem' extension on the end.

How can I go about this? I need to archive these photos onto my external hard drive so they will be backed up.

After the encryption is off transfer the files to the PC. Change the 'rem' extension to 'jpg' and see if the picture is viewable.

Hello Dark Scyth,

I had to create a new folder on my BlackBerry's SD card and move all the pictures from the BlackBerry > Pictures folder to the new one, which decrypted them (they lost the .rem extension at the end).

It turns out it was a different SD card to the one I used in the BlackBerry for two years, which I think is still somewhere in my house.
