At the time when Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was released, games were still mostly sold through stores. To interest people in buying their games, publishers would sometimes release rolling demos of their game, which is a copy that loops through videos and game footage. This was also the case for Jazz Jackrabbit 2, which got version 1.20d, Rolling Demo.
The rolling demo of Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is built upon version 1.20 of the game. Though there is no menu available in this version of the game, the internal version is listed as 1.20d. It came on a CD-Rom inside a paper sleeve, with instructions printed on the disc.
As the name suggests, there is no game to be played in this version. Instead it keeps playing the same loop: first the usual Jazz Jackrabbit 2 intro, consisting of the Epic Megagames logo, the Orange Games logo and the Project 2 logo, as well as the intro video. After that, two recorded demos of the game are played, picked alphabetically. Lastly the ending cutscene of the game is played, after which the loop restarts. There are a total of 10 recorded demos available in this version, meaning 5 unique loops. Two of these demos, Hell.j2m and Labrat1.j2m are unique to this version of the game. None of the other demos survived from version 1.21 onward, since they were all re-recorded, except for Diam1.j2m which was dropped altogether. The recorded demos for share1, share2 and share3, which were also re-recorded, did show back up in the Macintosh shareware versions for some reason.
Unfortunately, this version of the game runs into a fatal bug after a number of loops. A memory bug exists in earlier versions of the game where memory does not get cleared properly after playing a level. This isn't a big issue in the regular game, but it is in this version, because of the Orange Games intro. While the other intros consist of video files, the Orange Games one does not, and it needs a fair bit of memory to be able to play its sound effects. After a number of recorded demos have played, the game will crash when trying to show the Orange Games logo with a memory error. The error can be circumvented by using the -nosound parameter when running the game, since this will skip the Orange Games logo. This bug was less of an issue in the original game, because the chance of somebody playing the intro again after playing some levels was low. The memory bug was ultimately fixed in the 1.23 version of the game. It is unknown how this issue impacted the workings of this version in stores.
