Knights of the old republic 1 problem

I recently bought KOTOR 1 and got really into it, however i have got quite a way through it and just after i have found out my main character is Revan and fought the space battle it comes up with "KOTOR has stopped working" and then it proceeds to close

Any ideas?

Install the latest patch if you haven't already: LucasArts.com | Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that appears to fix some random crash bugs.

If that doesn't fix it if you are on Vista / Win 7 try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
