Scariest Game?

In honor of the impending Halloween holiday, I was thinking about what game made me the most uneasy and created a high level of tension while playing. My vote would have to be Condemned: Criminal Origins; this was a launch title for the Xbox 360. The reason I chose this game was because I remember playing the game in the dark and beong scared out of my mind at some points. What made the game scary for me was the atmosphere of the game. The lighting in the games creates a high level of tension, along with the sudden sounds that you will hear while playing. The scariest part of the game that I remember very vividly is when you are chasing a suspect into an abandoned clothing mall. Most of the lights are off, and there are manequins everywhere. Evntually you get used to them, but the second you get comfortable, one of them reaches out and grabs you because it was an enemy the whole time.

Some other choices I have are: Dead Space, Resident Evil 1, SAW, and Silent Hill: Homecoming. What about you guys? What are your scariest games and why? Include any honorable mentions as well if you like.

i wouldnt say the game as a whole but just one mission in Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is very scary and you have to play it for yourself to see because it really freaks you out. the mission is Ocean House Hotel and is the second thing in the game you are asked to do.

To be honest games just don’t scare me, there not real so I find it hard to be scared by a game. I know a few people who were really scared by Doom 3 back when it was released.

The only game I can remember that made me jump was Halo on the PC, it was really quiet so I turned the volume up loud then some grunt jumped out of nowhere which made me jump.

InsaneNutter you just haven't been playing the right games. Take CurlySteve's advice and have a play of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, it is by far the scariest game I've ever played and far scarier than any film I've ever seen.

I will finish Dead Space. I will finish Dead Space. At some point, when I can stand it. I know the game is meant to be scary and the fact it's only a game and the fact that I'm not really on the ship Ishimura but I can't help get sucked into the atmosphere of it all. I'm only at the start of the game and the part that's made me jump most is when you're coming back from releasing an airlock. I go out of a door into space (side of ship has been blown off) and all I can hear is the dim sounds of my footsteps. Everything is eerily quiet and as I'm about to reach the next door I turn around to see if I haven't missed anything only for one of the dead corpse enemies to be standing right there ready to attack me. Because the game uses sounds well to increase tension and create a great atmosphere the fact that this part of the game had none lulled me into a false sense of security. The other game I can think of is Bioshock. When you're in the dentistry section of Rapture theres a cabinet with a splice upgrade on it and when I took it and turned around the dentist was standing right there. I jumped like crazy. Guess I don't like the sudden unexpected appearances of enemies in games!
