PlayStation 4 System Update / Firmware Version 1.76

    Released:
    2nd September 2014

    Download:

    System Update:
Download PlayStation 4 System Update 1.76
System Recovery: Download PlayStation 4 System Recovery 1.76

    System Update or System Recovery?

The system update is all that you require to update a PS4 and is generally what you will want to download in most cases. The System Recovery will only be required if you upgrade the hard drive inside the PS4. This will allow the PS4's operating system to be re-installed on the new hard drive.

    How to use:

    1. Download the System Update from the link above
    2. Extract the PS4UPDATE.PUP with WinRAR or another program capable of extracting zip files
    3. On a FAT32 formatted USB memory stick create a folder called PS4, then inside this folder create a folder called UPDATE
    4. Copy the extracted PS4UPDATE.PUP to the USB memory stick in the PS4 > UPDATE folder
    5. Connect the USB memory stick to the PS4, then on the PS4 go to Settings > System Software Update
    6. Follow the screens to complete the update

Features added in the PlayStation 4 1.76 System / Firmware update:

Minor changes and was the last update until version 2.0.

Note: This is the firmware your PS4 must be on to take advantage of the BadIRET exploit.

You can only install this on PS4 consoles that are on a firmware lower than 1.76

    Hi
Can I install the recovery version on a 2016 PS4 C-Chassis which wasn't made with 1.76? I also have a new hard drive but I don't wanna risk getting my already banned ps4 bricked because it isn't supported with 1.76.

You can't downgrade your PS4 firmware at this time. You can only upgrade to a newer firmware version.

No I don't think you understand what I mean. If I get a brand new hard drive without any PS4 OS and install the firmware 1.76 recovery instead of the latest version would this work or will it still be incompatible regardless of whether I use a new hard drive?

The PS4 still had some internal memory storing things unique to your console, this also includes what system version it has been upgraded to.

So what this means is that no one can go down to 1.76 without upgrading from a lower firmware and your saying downgrade isn't an option? In that case what is the recovery for because you can't use it to downgrade from the latest version. Just curious thanks for the help! Also one more thing if I did try using recovery on a new hard drive would my psps4 get bricked or would it just not let me install it?

If you have updated past 1.76 you can't downgrade, all you can do is re install the same firmware version (if you change hard drive for example) or a newer firmware version.

PS4's on lower firmware versions can still update to 1.76 offline, or change the hard drive and re install 1.76.

That's exactly what i did, last year i got a PS4 on 1.05 and updated to 1.76 offline: PS4 Offline Update Using Safe Mode [Update to 1.76]

You can only upgrade not downgrade. You need a PS4 on a lower firmware than 1.76 to upgrade to 1.76.

    Hello InsaneNutter,

I have been going everywhere trying to get some help until i found your post.
Please i recently bought a PS4 on ebay in an AS IS condition (quite cheap because i don't have the money), in the hope of repairing it for my use. The problem with it was that it was always giving a update file corrupted error. Yesterday i tried everything and all i got was errors trying to get it to update from the update files i downloaded from the Playstation website v5.05. (Tried different usb sticks and browser downloads but to no avail).
But this morning while thinking about the problem, it struck me that anytime i went to initialize in safe mode, it would ask me to put a usb which has a version of 1.75 or higher. So i quickly googled for versions 1.75, and i landed on this forum. You said you used this update 1.76 on this website last year?
How did you do it, because i think i may have been lucky to get a console asking me for such a low version of 1.75 or higher.
Is the file you downloaded from here legit?
Did you have any problems with error codes? Was it straight forward for you when you used >700mb in option 7 of the safe mode menu?
Please help me with what you did. Sorry for my long message but i need help. Thanks.

Have a look at my guide here: PS4 Offline Update Using Safe Mode [Update to 1.76] this is how to update offline using safe mode.

I believe you want to use the System Recovery and not System Update download as the System Recovery will recover a system where the hard drive has been changed and the System Update won't. I hope that helps.
