Want to run your own code on a retail Xbox 360 without opening the case or soldering anything? That's what Grimdoomer's BadUpdate does. It runs unsigned code from a USB drive on an ordinary console on the final 17559 system software, and it's the starting point for payloads like XeUnshackle and FreeMyXe (both on Digiex).

It isn't a softmod. The console goes back to normal when you power it off or restart, so you run the exploit again every time.

  1. Format a USB drive as FAT32 and copy everything from the zip to its root, so the BadUpdatePayload folder and the Content folder (which holds the exploit save for the game) sit at the top.
  2. To run something useful once the exploit fires, replace BadUpdatePayload/default.xex with a payload such as XeUnshackle or FreeMyXe.
  3. Disconnect the console from the network, plug the USB drive in and start Rock Band Blitz, the game this package is built for. The project page has the exact exploit steps: https://github.com/grimdoomer/Xbox360BadUpdate
  4. When the exploit succeeds, the payload loads. Plug the network cable back in only if your payload needs it.

Tip: you need your own copy of Rock Band Blitz, and the console must be on the final dashboard, 17559. It only works there.
