What is Pokemon Go?

Pokémon GO is an augmented-reality game developed by Niantic for Android and iOS devices. The game was partially released in July 2016, along with a small wearable device developed by Nintendo, which uses a Bluetooth connection to notify users when a Pokémon is nearby with an LED and a light rumble. The game allows players to capture, battle, train, and trade virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world.

Now’s your chance to discover and capture the Pokémon all around you—so get your shoes on, step outside, and explore the world. You’ll join one of three teams and battle for the prestige and ownership of Gyms with your Pokémon at your side.

Pokémon are out there, and you need to find them. As you walk around a neighborhood, your smartphone will vibrate when there’s a Pokémon nearby. Take aim and throw a Poké Ball… You’ll have to stay alert, or it might get away!

Search far and wide for Pokémon and items - Certain Pokémon appear near their native environment—look for Water-type Pokémon by lakes and oceans. Visit PokéStops, found at interesting places like museums, art installations, historical markers, and monuments, to stock up on Poké Balls and helpful items.

Catching, hatching, evolving, and more - As you level up, you’ll be able to catch more-powerful Pokémon to complete your Pokédex. You can add to your collection by hatching Pokémon Eggs based on the distances you walk. Help your Pokémon evolve by catching many of the same kind.

Take on Gym battles and defend your Gym - As your Charmander evolves to Charmeleon and then Charizard, you can battle together to defeat a Gym and assign your Pokémon to defend it against all comers.

Thanks for posting it here! I already downloaded it some time ago and was surprised by how well it works.

Even though it's not officially out in NL and the rest of europe yet, all gyms (read: playgrounds, schools, and churches ) seem to be occupied and changing faction a lot while average CP (combat power) gets higher. Since day 2 of release, I stroll with it about once a day but can't keep up with most gyms at this point.

Only real issue I have is that my phone keeps going into standby somehow. I can't just put it in my pocket or hand (even with the battery saver feature on) without using the screen at least once every 10 minutes (the max idle time on my phone model). I don't think it's supposed to do that?

Also, as expected, it totally devours the battery if in use for a few hours. So be aware if you have to use your phone professionally! Just charge it at night if you expect to go out and play it next day!

I've noticed that, every Pokemon Gym i've seen so far has been a Church. Pokemon Centers i've seen have been a Pub, Museum,Post Office and the University in my town.

I'm not totally sure how its supposed to work when your phone is idle, I think its supposed to vibrate or give you a notification if a Pokemon is near, however i've not had that happen yet if it currently works. I've only really used it on my way to work and way home from work, I pass through my local town which seems to have a lot of Pokemon Centers / Wild Pokemon.

In the area near my house theirs nothing at all, with the exception of a Pokemon Center at a pub around 10 mins from my house. I've not had much look with wild Pokemon in my home area either.

Over all i'm very impressed, its certainly an interesting idea for a mobile phone game. I think it will only get better once it's actually released here in the UK too.

One thing i do think that would be really nice is allowing Pokemon you catch to be sent to Pokemon Bank, that could be really useful for gamers who are playing Pokemon on the 3DS.

Transfering to Pokémon Bank or a similar form of main game integration is apparently something the developers are thinking about, but I don't know how they'd work it out since Pokémon in the GO app have different kind of stat measurements. They could easely convert the 2 attacks a GO Pokémon knows to their main game equivalent, but the other stats (Attack, Defense, Speed, etc) would have to be generated from scratch as it's too different. Maybe the CP level in GO can be calculated to a level on a 1-100 scale as well?

As for the issue with going standby, I just used a workaround by using the app Wakey. There are more apps that do the same thing, but basically it places a notification service with a wakelock, so that you can use any app without your phone going into standby while Wakey is active. It can also dim the screen or completely darken it until you touch it to conserve battery power, so essentially this works better than the game's internal Battery Saver feature. It's strange though, as the iPhone version of Pokémon GO does this right and wakelocks natively.

And finally, the app had been released in Europe about 2 weeks ago, and a lot of things happened surrounding it. There should be more Pokéstops now, at least in my home area there are! So maybe try and check if there are more silly 'landmarks' added such as a bicycle stand or a hollow tree. The servers are working better now that they've restricted API access. Sadly, that also means services like Pokevision don't work anymore and finding out where to encounter what Pokémon is now just up to chance, words, and speculation.

Still, I never thought an app like this could revive the Pokémon hype I grew up with, even while trends nowadays come and go a lot quicker thanks to the internet and globalization. I wonder how much players will still be excited about this game near the end of the year. At least I think I am, as I've already ordered my Pokémon GO Plus wristband from Nintendo.
