whats better 720p or 1080i?

1080I is better than 720p. My TV runs at 1080p. In-less I'm mistaken 1080i and 720p is like resolutions. The higher the better.

I personally think 720p is better, however you could argue this both ways.

720p is a progressive signal where all 720 lines are displayed on the screen at the same time, a 1080i signal has 1080 lines however they are not displayed on-screen at the same time.
Without referring to any sources off the top of my head I believe 720p will display 60fps where as 1080i can only display 30fps, the higher the FPS the smoother game play experience you will have.

720p is better suited for fast moving images such as games and sports channels as you don’t get any blur or “stepping effect” as people like to call it, where as you do with 1080i images.

Yes, plus a good refresh rate is needed. 120hz is amazing.
However 1080i is best for those casual gamers and movie watchers. You get a more crisp image, it looks terrific!

I tried both on the xbox and to be honest I did not see much difference. I also thought the higher the better so i'll stick with 1080i.

That’s exactly why I say you can argue it both ways hehe

In theory 1080i can display more detail in a HD image depending on the source and TV so would be better suited to something in HD that’s slow moving, however a lot of TV’s can’t display 1080i correctly anyway and end up down scaling it to 720p.

As far as the 360 goes most games are designed to run at 720p then upscale/downscale depending on your TV. I would choose 720p (or 1080p if supported by the TV) for the fast moving games that will run at more than 30fps.

To be honest most of the time I can’t tell the difference between the picture quality on the Xbox 360, however I can on the Media Centre PC when its running at 1080i compared to 720p/1080p.

Higher is not always better as I said above.
