No you need to own the game, this mainly benefits people who might have really slow internet at home, however can download much quicker at a location where it might not be possible to set an Xbox up to download.

1. Sign in with an account which has the game on it.
2. From settings make xbox as home xbox.
3. Delete the account from the xbox after that.
4. Make your console offline from network settings (no LAN or WIFI).
5. Play the games offline as you wish, you will have access to the games as long as you still offline.
6. You can make these steps on many consoles (for now you can make home 5 times in a single year)
7. You can't go online other wise the games will stop working.

For now there is no proper way to play games without having them, because there is no "Jailbreak" for the xbox one.
Playing offline is the only way so far, you can finish the games and go back to the games you bought.

Is there a way to download a previous version of a game? Just changing the version numbers in the links doesn't work obviously as directories are different. Is there a method I can use to search previous versions at all?

Yeah me too it gave me an error while copying plus a game was shown on the console as corrupted XD
