If you have formatted an unofficial hard drive for use in the Xbox 360, it will not contain the compatibility partition. This partition is required to play backwards compatible original Xbox games on the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 Hdd Compatibility Partition Fixer tool will create that partition for you, as described in the tutorial here: Upgrade a Jtagged Xbox 360's hard drive, restore the avatars and Xbox 1 emulator.

Be sure to backup all data on your Xbox 360 hard drive before using this tool.
