Before Windows Vista changed the way Windows Mobile devices connect, ActiveSync was how every Pocket PC and Windows Mobile phone talked to a PC, and 4.5 is the last release of it. On Windows XP it keeps contacts, calendar and email in step with Outlook and copies files to and from the device. It's worth keeping around for anyone with an XP machine and an older handheld.
Download:
Download Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5
Unzip it and run Active Sync 4.5.msi on Windows XP with the phone still disconnected. Once it's installed, connect the phone with its USB cable and set up a sync partnership when ActiveSync asks.
Tip: sync makes the phone and Outlook match, so anything you delete on one is deleted from the other next time. If the phone holds contacts you care about, sync once and check Outlook before you tidy up.
Windows Vista can't run this. It uses Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 instead.
