Overheating GPU after X-clamp fix

Hey guys,

So I tried fixing an RROD box using the x-clamp fix (using the standard recommended Lowes parts). The box didn't boot up after doing the fix, so I let it overheat (I was about to give up so I let the CPU and GPU overheat until I got the 2 red rings, instead of placing the fan over the CPU). Turns out doing that caused the box to work again.

The problem I'm having now is that when I run the XBOX my GPU gets hot, and does so after only a couple of minutes (I notice it happening while touching the heatsink), After 5-10 minutes the XBOX will freeze completely (it does not red ring, and will start again if I let it cool off).

I was wondering if you guys might know what would cause the GPU to get so hot? I spread AS5 on the dies before mounting the heatsinks back on, and used a credit card to make sure only a thin layer was covering the die.

The GPU would probably need to be cleaned from the bottom melted glue and all of that. Though that would have to be re-soldered and all of that, I thought I saw a guide somewhere but I can't really remember where.

I tried running the fans at full speed to see how hot the system would get and if it might survive. I'm running freestyle dash so I can monitor the heat.

At 100% fan speed I was able to keep the system running at CPU: 57.8C, GPU: 57.7C, RAM: 54.5C, and MB: 33.9C. Those temperatures were taken after playing Fallout for an hour or so with the system opened up and fan shroud on with DVD tray on top of the GPU as normal.

I'm kind of afraid to see what would happen to try that test again with fan on auto. Does anyone know what kind of temperate the system should normally operate at?

I'm hoping to stay away from reballing or heat gunning anything since it seems to be out of the RROD phase...if I can just keep it cool enough :/

Maybe try adding a couple of additional fans like the guy on this video has?

If placed correctly it should certainly help with your overheating problem. If you can play for over an hour without an Rrod that sounds promising.

Your GPU temp doesnt sound that bad at all, I know my PC's GPU gets hotter than that after gaming for a bit.

Im not sure what an ideal GPU temperature on the 360 would be, of course the lower the better.

To quote someone on Xbox Scene:

CPU temperatures are acceptable to as high as 70C.
GPU works fine towards boiling point. 80C is no problem at all. Mine ran at 88 for a while without a hitch.

This guy here has also done a bit of testing.

Xbox 360 setup and GPU temp after one hour:

Stock 360, no added fans: 80 C
Open 360, no added fans: 70 C
Stock 360, whisper fan + xcm add-on: 54 C
Open 360, whisper fan + xcm add-on: 44 C

Hope that helps, sounds like some additional fans can only help things... apart from making the 360 sound even more like a jumbo jet.

Whoa, that is exactly what I was looking for. I even checked Xbox Scene but had no luck.

I had previously tried setting the fans to auto for a couple of minutes and reached around 63C. I figured it was getting critical because the lights on the front of the Xbox started going from orange to red (I had it displaying temperature there as well).

Now I'm wondering why the xbox was actually freezing. It would seem to suggest being either the CPU or GPU since putting the fans on high allows it to work. But now it seems the temperatures I get aren't that bad at all. Mind boggling.

Hmm if the xbox stops with the video on screen frozen, could that be a CPU overheating issue instead of a GPU?

It might not be that CPU and GPU are reaching critical temps, it could be that the connection to them are getting broken at higher temps due to expansion.
