What is the UXTHEME.DLL Patch?
This patch will allow you to install one of many custom themes available online for Windows XP, all you need to do is download the UXTHEME patch here. The patch will modify the UXTHEME.DLL on your computer to allow themes not digitally signed by Microsoft to be used on your computer, once you have installed the patch you will need to re start your computer for the changes to take effect.

To use custom themes simply unzip them to Windows\Resources\Themes and apply them, If you are not currently using Windows XP Service Pack 3 I recommend you upgrade as soon as possible, you can download SP3 from here.

Some themes I liked when I used to use XP:
Luna Element 5.1 Black
Luna Element 5.1 Blue
Watercolor Emico (Blue, Ergonomic Blue, Black, Silver and Olive)

Windows XP SP3 with a custom theme (Luna Element 5.1 Blue)
xp-sp3-uxtheme-png.183

Yes it will only work in SP3, here is a version that will patch SP2.

I only included the SP3 one as at the time it was quite hard to find a patch that worked and most people should be on SP3 now anyway.

Patch causing problem with Explorer.exe

The patch and themes are working fine on my Administrator account. However, when my girlfriend tries to log onto her account, before desktop shows a prompt says," Explorer.exe failed to initialize. Error Code(0X000000050) <--- Err. Code not Exact!

I am sure this is because of the patch because we had no problems before that and this computer was just reformatted and clean out not even 2 weeks ago.

I am running Windows XP SP3. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I do not have a recovery disc.

I remember this did happen to me once a long time ago, I created a new account and logged on to that. It worked perfectly so I just transferred the documents over and deleted the broken account.

Sorry I don’t really have a better suggestion, It never happened on any other pc’s for me.
