And WHEN it does, it won't play any games. Only DVDs (some!)

Time for the trashbin?
 
Sounds like the DVD drive is failing, other than that its a perfectly good 360 I presume?

It is possible to swap the DVD drive, however you'd have to flash the firmware on it. You could also RGH hack the console.
