If you're still running Windows 7 without a service pack, this is the update to get first. Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in February 2011. It rolls up the updates since Windows 7 first shipped, and Microsoft wants it installed before later updates and many programs will go on. The download holds the full standalone installers for both 32-bit (about 537 MB) and 64-bit (about 903 MB), so you can update a machine offline.
Download:
Download Windows 7 Service Pack 1
You'll need a Windows 7 licence or a Windows 7 disc, because this only updates an existing install. If you need to put Windows 7 on in the first place, the 64-bit and 32-bit recovery discs are here, and so is the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool for making a bootable USB.

- Check which version you have: right-click Computer > Properties and read System type (32-bit or 64-bit). If it already says Service Pack 1, you don't need this.
- Extract the zip and run the matching installer, X86 for 32-bit or X64 for 64-bit.
- Back up your files first and make sure the system drive has at least 5 GB free for 32-bit or 8 GB for 64-bit. Leave the PC plugged in and let it restart a few times. The install takes around 30 to 60 minutes.
