The theory is that firmware can be detected when doing an update through Xbox Live.

Last question.. Can I update to play Divx without a problem?? Because when a try to play Divx videos appears a message that I have to connect to upgrade someting.

Ps. I don't play online.. only offline.

After some tests I've concluded the following..

The system update to 2.0.9199 is done on your console but the avatar part of the update is done on your HDD or USB.

After doing the 2.0.9199 without avatars (8mb) I lost my avatars and had to do the Xbox Live update to get them again.. now, when I removed my HDD and inserted a USB PENDRIVE with my sister's gamertag I didn't had the avatars again.. and I was being asked to download the Xbox Live update again..

Is this something that usually happens? Can I be flagged by updating online just the avatar part?

This because I couldn't manage to do the full update by USB PENDRIVE since I had previously done the one without avatars.. I had the $SystemUpdate folder with the full 86mb but no answer from the dashboard..

I have Dashboard 2.0.8955.0
I never had problems with games needing updates at all (old & new games)
I never went online.
I have modded xbox360 ixtreme 1.6 (I think)

My problem:
All my AVI & MKV files don't play on xbox giving me 51-CDOOF236 on USB, CDs, DVDs, only video CDs I bought from market works.

My question:
Is it normal that my dashboard doesn't play xvid AVIs and play games with no updates? so will this update fix my problem ? what should I do ?

You have to go online to download the optional media update, that allows you to play xvid and so on. There is no way to get it offline without a jtag hacked console.

what exactly is safe to do online, just following the update only ? can I got to xbox site to browse free downloads ?

will this make x264 playable ? MKV and MP4 ? I am asking because I don't know which torrent movie to choose if the user didnt say compatible with xbox ? *-)

iXtreme 1.6 can be detected as soon as the console connects to Xbox Live, Live would be a lot safer using the new iXtreme LT as i don't believe that is detectable at the moment. Either way I don't *think* your going to get banned on the spot, im not 100% on that as my console is not flashed, if you ask around you might be able to get a better answer.

The optional media update will play xvid / divx and i think MP4, anything in the MKV container can not be played on the 360.

I went online and got the update and some cookies, all my AVI files worked but MP4 is giving me 69-C00D119A despite being labeled as xbox compatible.

Also got 80-C00DF242 ?

So this update and the media pack is the only thing I have to do ? isn't there like monthly update for codex or M$ isn't not that worried about us ?

hey...i just installed the update...and it works fine ^^
i configured my flash drive already...
only problem is my avatar wont show up...but i am able to sign in....
i can still play "burned" games...

i just want my avatar to show up again i just unlocked the GAC armor from dead to rights....
so will my avatar show up again if i update to the june 2009 update?

EDIT - Nvermind ^^ i just downloaded the update WITH AVATARS then update again...and it works...i can still play "burned games" and all that stuff....thank you so much insane...you really made my day ^^

Mr. InsaneNutter I have updated my console which is banned from xbl via my USB Flash drive. My flashdrive has 512MB memory and I formatted it to FAT32 I carefully followed the Microsoft instruction to update via flashdrive.

This is what I did:
1. I pluged the flashdrive into a USB port of my Xbox 360
console while it was turnedoff.
2. Then I turned it on.
3. As I remembered, I was taken to the dashboard first before update
the program started and asked me to update.
4. Then I chose ''yes, update now''.
5. While the console was updating, it reached halfway through the
''progress bar'' then my console restarted. After a very brief moment, it
starts the update again and this time it finished the update with the
''progress bar'' being finished.
6. Then my console restarted and it takes me to the xbox dashboard.
7. So I turned it off again and removed my Flashdrive from the console.
8. I powered on my console again and checked my dashboard version and
it displays ''2.0.9199''.

I want to ask if the part ''while my console was updating, it reached halfway through the ''progress bar'' then my console restarted. After a very brief moment, it starts the update again and this time it finished the update with the ''progress bar'' being finished.'' normal?

I am asking because I've noticed some difference which are:
1. when my console was at 2.0.8955, I think that the dashboard takes a
little less to load than at 2.0.9199 whenever I switch on my console.

2. And whenever I exit a game and go back to the dashboard menu, it
brings me back to the ''welcome'' lane/section, compared to when my
console was at 8955 that whenever I exit a game and go back to
dashboard it brings me back under the ''my inbox'' section.

3. And also, I noticed that whenever I exit a game, it is a little slower
to take me back to the dashboard compared to when my console was
at 2.0.8955.

Though I can't say I remember it stopping half way, there isn't a problem with the way it updated. If there were a problem your console would of probably bricked, by it bricking it renders it totally useless and unplayable,which would just result in a E-- black screen. The update finished fine as you have nothing near those symptoms.

It is certainly not bricked. I just updated to the latest dashboard to uncripple my HDD, and indeed it it uncrippled my HDD. I just installed a game off my hdd after I finished the update and the installation was sucessful and I am able to play games off my hdd again.

But, is it just me that I noticed that 2.0.9199 is slower than 2.0.8955 or is it really the case?
Maybe it has something to do with the way my console was updated?

Everytime I boot up the xbox it gives me the same message, everytime it fails. I tried downloading the 8955 version from here but it gave me the same message. What should I do?

No, I think its with every console. I have also noticed slight speed issues with my 360. Its not extremely slower but I have noticed a few seconds difference. Mine was updated via Xbox Live.

Why dont you try to re-update the console by plugging in the flashdrive (make sure it's FAT32 formatted) to the console while it is turned off then turning it on.
