Old PC games love to stop with an error like "d3dx9_43.dll is missing" or "xinput1_3.dll was not found", and this is the cure. The DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) are the latest complete set of the older DirectX libraries: the D3DX, XAudio, XInput and Managed DirectX files that games and programs from 2005 onwards ask for. Windows ships DirectX itself but not every one of those older files, which is why one game after another still asks for them.

Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

It's a self-extracting installer of about 100 MB that works offline, and it runs on Windows XP SP2 and later.

  1. Run directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. It asks where to unpack: make a new empty folder and choose that.
  2. Open the folder and run DXSETUP.exe, then click through the installer.
  3. Restart the game or program that was complaining. You can delete the unpacked folder afterwards.

Tip: games built on Microsoft's online layer may also want Games for Windows LIVE.

Update: it works on Windows 8 and 10 as well. XNA games need the XNA Game Studio 4.0 Refresh.
