Want your PS2 to boot homebrew from a memory card instead of needing a disc? That's Free McBoot. The same installer also does Free HDD Boot for a PS2 hard drive. This is version 1.966, by Neme, jimmikaelkael, SP193 and Woon Yung, and the readme says all retail PS2 consoles are supported and no extra files are needed.

Tip: let the installer dump the card first, as mc0.bin or mc1.bin. That keeps your saves safe if anything goes wrong.

- Extract the FMCB_1.966 folder to a USB drive. Keep every file, the lang folder included, or the installer won't work.
- Run FMCBInstaller.elf on the console. You need some other way to start it the first time, such as an exploit disc or an existing launcher.
- Pick an installation type (normal, cross-model, cross-region or multi-installation) and install to the memory card. Normal is the one for a card that stays in the same console.
