Free McBoot is the classic way to boot homebrew from a PS2 memory card. PS2BBL, israpps' PlayStation 2 Basic BootLoader, is the configurable alternative: a text file decides what starts, and it works on the PSX DESR as well. This is the build of 11 February 2026.

Download PS2BBL (11 February 2026 build)
Choose the folder that matches your console: PS2 for a normal memory card, PS2_HDD for the internal hard drive, PS2_MX4SIO for an SD card in the memory card port, PS2_MMCE or PSX_MMCE for MMCE memory card emulation, and PSX for the DESR. Each has a normal ELF and a COMPRESSED_ one that is less than half the size, handy if the card is short on space. Copy the files over as the project documentation describes. The SYS-CONF folder holds PS2BBL.INI, the config you edit.
The default config starts OPNPS2LD.ELF by itself if it finds it in an APPS folder on a USB drive or memory card, or in an OPL folder on the card, so drop Open PS2 Loader there and it just runs. Hold R1 at power-on for BOOT.ELF or ULE.ELF, Cross for the disc, Start for the normal PS2 menu.
Tip: keep a copy of the original PS2BBL.INI before you start editing it.
