    i'm just wondering why it has to be a WD hard drive when the actual XBOX HD is a Hitachi, hence the firmware.

    Can't we just buy 250GB Hitachi drives and flash the firmware to hitachi if needed?

    Hey,

    Fantastic guide! I'm going to try it, but I have two questions:

    1) Can I do this all from Windows XP?
    2) Do all Laptops take 2.5" SATA Drives? I currently have an ASUS F3JM running a Seagate 250GB 7200.4. I ask because when I looked at my port in my laptop, it looks a little different than the port in the Xbox360. Both the drive and laptop say they are SATA 2.5", but I wonder if there are different kinds that would affect connectivity.

    Thanks

    From what I understand, other harddrive could work but you'd have to make sector 13-24 by yourself if you did, this program will write the sectors for the WD drives but wasn't made to work with other drives.
    It should work just fine in XP and I'm pretty sure they're both 2.5" SATA drives.

    Great tutorial!

    I got a new Slim and a WD2500BEKT manf: 12 May 2010
    I got the flash to take after several tries... tried different sata ports... finally got it to work after downloading hddhackr right from the hddhackr page.
    When I put the drive in the Slim I get the E68 error, tried reseating the drive several times and no luck. I found a post somewhere that said they enabled RPS (Reduced Power Spinup) with a jumper and it worked. Tried that and still E68 error. I figure the drive is being detected by the 360 or I wouldn't get the E68 error because it works fine without the drive. The hard drive cage in the Slim does seem kind of loose/flimsy. I'm wondering if the drive enclosure would help or if there is something wrong with the drive and or process.
    Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks in advance for the help!

    1.undo the drive using hddhackr,after verified its a wd again proceed to 2
    2.boot into windows and move not copy your undo.bin(on flashdrive) to somewhere on your hard drive
    (hddhackr wont create a new undo.bin if there is already one)
    3.read this guide again,maybe you missed a step
    4.try hddhackr again
    5.the xbox should recognize your drive

    nope its in the hardrive enclosure mounted on top of the 360. the hddss.bin i used the one that said hddss_250gb.bin and i erased it to say hddss.bin to use for the flash. what i don't get is when i turned the xbox off it had 257gb then i turned it back on and it said 13.3 lol

    something that im just going to add is when i look at the files on my flash drive it says hddss and then when you scroll over the file it says (.bin) same thing for the UNDO file. does that mean it just doesn't show the file extensions because if i renamed it to hddss.bin lol it would say (which it did) HDDSS.BIN.bin thanks!

    Thanks for your response...
    I tried your instructions and now when I boot with the drive attached, "something" is detected on a sata port (bios) and hddhackr detects "something" but no vendor info. I tried to restore the firmware and reflash and neither worked.
    Now when I try to restore I get the no vendor info error and when I try to flash I get the can't read sector 16 error. Is it possible this thing is bricked?
    I've flashed drives before and it is a simple process so I don't think I made a mistake. I've tried on 2 different systems now both w/nForce sata controllers. I feel like I've experienced all the errors that everyone has mentioned in this post... "No ATA Identify", "Check DRQ", "Bad/Wrong Vendor Offset", etc. I tried booting to the WD Dos Diags and it won't touch the drive because it thinks it isn't a WD drive now. My undo.bin file looks like it should with the correct info but it seems like there's no firmware on the drive at all now... Any suggestions?

    @arses
    Yes.You can only use 250gb.
    @chris.gresock
    It might work but if you have a sata drive already use that port.
    There's a link on the first page for the slim case
