You NEED that key to DECRYPT the protected executable (ra3game.dat). Now I'm not talking about a serial or cd-key, but the key used to encrypt the executable in the first place. If you fetch it of the net or of the CD (which probably doesn't exist), I don't care, that's your own business.

I appologize, I misunderstood and thought you were just another 2 post nub LOL. But yes, speaking on that matter, securom does probably encrypt the data in the exe. Or some sort of obfuscation. I know its crackable though, they cracked bioshock :-)

Then how does a legit activated copy decrypt the .dat file?

@equazcion:

Securom in the past just requires that the cd is inserted. What I think your missing, is that this securom protection is MUCH more than just that check. It also requires an online activation to happen. And you can't just 'remove' securom. Its not that easy.
 
equazcion: agreed with klipseracer. This is pointless, just wasting of bandwidth of server and your net. You can do your "monitoring stuff", you still need someone to actually CRACK, e.g. REMOVE SECUROM/SECUROM CHECKS. Otherwise you're wasting your time.
 
The simple fact that we are here STILL in dispute on how it works just shows that anyone posting here doesn't have the knowledge or capability to crack this beast. If you do, please spout up. Otherwise, i'll see ya guys in retail!(maybe)

Klipseracer: I'm hearing that something, probably a .dat file, needs decrypting. Ok. So where does a legitimately activated copy get that decryption key? Normally that would be from a cd. Assuming an activated copy of RA3 beta starts up on a computer without net access, where does the key come from?
 
i badly want to play this and i really admire how hard you have been working if i had this much knowledge i wouldnt stop helping you guys so... can someone give me a straight answer can u launch the game is there a crack

See what I'm getting at? ;)

This is a unique situation. Yes something needs decrypting, yeah we need a key blah blah, but what does it matter? EVERYTHING needed to start up this game is stored locally somehow. It's not on a CD and it's not being received from a server somewhere. Whatever it is, we should be able to simply COPY it without having to actually figure out what the key IS.
 
Why can't it be the activation key sent by EA ?

It is stored in the registry, so it could check the key each time you start the game with some algorithm.

And the algo also makes it possible to be different maybe.

Edit: Well, in my encrypt & decrypt strings program, there is only one key that can decrypt a specific string, but maybe EA's algo can use different decryption keys.
 
yeah, so the ones i just posted are the ones that should go with the registry... but honestly. i think that its really tied to the beta key, not the registry so much. maybe both.

Actually.. Maybe since the beta key is In the registry, you could hope upon a hope, that the correct beta key, plus these files would do it. I'll give it a try now.
 
I see two files with garbled names made up of symbols and weird characters, in my UserData folder. I never see these when people post their files, and when I try, they won't copy and I can't even edit them.

These could be important. Maybe SecuROM exploits Windows' inability to work with certain filenames, so that we can't copy or manipulate the files we need to?
 
Here's a screenshot of those mystery files as shown in Explorer (the last two, with weird names). Is it just me who has these? What the hell are they? I can't even view them.
