About the 3DS Virtual Console GF Mew Distribution:

The Virtual Console (VC) Game Freak Mew was distributed for a limited time in Japan and England.

Japan:

In Japan the Mew was distributed to those who purchased a 20th Anniversary Pokemon Clear 2DS (Red, Green, Blue & Yellow) that came bundled with a collection ticket.

The ticket could be taken to a participating Pokemon Center in Japan, where the player could receive the Mew via trade.

England:

In England the Mew was distributed at Nintendo UK’s Pokémon Festival, which took place on 22nd November 2016 at The Old Truman Brewery, from 5pm to 10pm.

Tickets for this event were very limited and required to have a Mew traded over to you. Nintendo UK teamed up with a selection of partners to offer chances to win an invitation to the event.

Technical Info:

This is the Japanese and English Mew Trading App used at the respective events in each country. The Mew trading app can be installed on any 3DS / 2DS console with custom firmware installed, this 3DS can then be used to trade a Mew over to another 3DS / 2DS console.

Essentially this distribution is a GameBoy emulator with a save state containing the event Mew in the party ready to trade. Once the Mew is traded you simply tap the bottom screen, restore the save state, and you are ready to distribute another Mew.

All Mew from this event are identical.

Equipment required to make use of this distribution on real hardware:
  • Two 3DS or 2DS consoles
  • The console distributing the Mew must have custom firmware installed
  • The console receiving the Mew must have own Red, Blue, Yellow (Or Green In Japan) which can be purchased from the Eshop.

To Install the 3DS Virtual Console GF Mew Distribution:

To install the Mew distribution we will use FBI, an open source title manager for the 3DS. If you have CFW on your 3DS part of setting this up will have been to install FBI.

Copy the seed 000400000018C400.dat or 000400000018C500.dat to the fbi > seed folder on your 3DS's SD card. If these folders do not exist you can create them:

Next copy the 000400000018C400 - Mew Trading App (J).cia or the 000400000018C500 - Mew Trading App (E).cia to somewhere on the 3DS's SD card, such as fbi > cia.

Now you can simply put the SD Card back inside your 3DS and use FBI to install 3DS Virtual Console GF Mew Distribution.

To Distribute 3DS Virtual Console GF Mew:

To distribute the 3DS Virtual Console GF Mew load up the distribution from the home screen and touch the bottom screen to open the Virtual Console menu:

Resume game:

Now simply undertake a trade as normal and invite the 3DS you wish to distribute the Mew to trade with you, like any other Gen 1 Pokemon link trade:

Congratulation you have distributed this Mew:

You can then simply load the restore point and distribute another Mew.

Hello and Merry Christmas, will this be the only one or will there be another surprise for Christmas as far as distributions are concerned? How's the PCNY distribution going?

Thanks for this awesome find! Worked great with my purchased games. I have some game files I injected myself with the correct title ID, but I can’t find the wireless patch to get the trading to work with the games I added. Are those files anywhere on this website for access? Other files I found are no longer supporting download

First and foremost, thank you for continuing releasing these awesome pokemon roms.
Just out of curiosity: is this rom a fully playable pokemon red?

Yup, it’s just that this version allows us to make save states (the original released vc games don’t). Since we can just replace it whenever we want to distribute a mew, it should be interesting being able to play this version with the save state feature.

edit: I was able to install both cias on my us console, so the japanese one is region free.

I know, maybe I am a little too late for the party... but when I try to open the installed app, I get a black screen full of codes and "press any button to turn off the console". Can anyone help me?

Did you install with the latest version of FBI and copy the seed to the correct place on the SD card before installing the CIA?

What system update is your 3DS on and what CFW do you use?

I updated FBI and it worked.. As it was installing other cia's I didnt think it was the problem. Thank you!

Wondering if someone can help, I've managed to get everything on the 3DS ok, but when I boot the game it doesn't recognise the save file and only shows "New Game" on the main menu. Where am I supposed to be saving the Save State file for this to work? Thanks in advance.

It's amazing, thank you so much for this.
A curious thing is, that I decided to try that on Citra Emulator. I didn't find any information about ''seed'' folder for citra, so I literally created that folder, and then loaded the game and it worked like a charm :D

Just out of curiosity, how was this software cracked? I read a discussion on ProjectPokemon talking about how it would be nearly impossible to brute force the encryption on it, so was someone able to get ahold of a distribution 3DS used at the UK event? Somehow that seems even more unlikely than figuring out the encryption key, but then again it's been quite a few years since that discussion took place and if there's one thing you shouldn't underestimate, it's the tenacity of a Pokémon fan lol.

Thanks for sharing this, I'll use this to get myself a legal Mew before the Bank servers inevitably shut down. I was going to use ACE for it, but when I discovered it didn't replicate the trash bytes, I went out searching for a more perfected version of the distribution and came across this page! Doesn't get more accurate than this :)

I may be wrong, but I believe both these .cia were made available through the gigaleak's releases:

https://wiki.raregamingdump.ca/index.php/Zammis_Clark_Breach

"2020, April 28
Titlekeys for DSiWare and WiiWare titles were released to 4chan.[15] These were generated using the Wii/DSi/WiiU/3DS titlekey generation algorithm, which was later released. 3DS .cia files of the following titles were also released:

  • Mew Trading App(E)
  • NinoTool
  • O-Power ROM
  • Mew Trading App(J)
  • CTR-N-NAGA
  • CTR-N-AJZA
  • CTR-N-AXDA
  • Pokémon Anti-Cheat
  • Don't touch this title (This is NDO Production Test Title)
  • CTR-N-AJ7A"

Is this restore point custom made or official?

Was this Mew distributed that way also in official locals? Did they had modified 3Ds's?

It is official.
Obv the didn't have CFW 3DSs, but they had dev units with this software preinstalled.

Interesting! I saw some videos from the locals in London distributing the event and they also had some instructions paper on the table explaining the steps. Do we have this instructions page somehow in better quality, scanned or something?
